Managing your Allergies and a Dog
Having allergies can be a hassle for anyone to live with on a daily basis. If you have allergies, getting a dog may seem out of the question because of the pet dander that will be brought into your home. The first factor that you should keep in mind is that you are allergic to the pet dander, not the dog. If you suffer from allergies, there are certain breeds of dogs that have less pet dander. These special breeds will be better for you and your family.
There are a number of breeds that have been found to produce less pet dander than other dogs. These include: Bichon Frise, Chinese Crested, Kerry blue terrier, Poodle, Schnauzer, Bedlington terrier, Irish Water Spaniel, and the Maltese, more commonly known as the Mexican hairless. These are just a few of the many breeds that can help to decrease your allergies if you are looking for a family dog.
Along with getting a dog with less dander, there are a few things that you can do to minimize the amount of allergens in the air in your home. One option is a HEPA air filter, which will help to pull all dust and dander from the air. Although this may not sound logical, vacuuming regularly will help to get rid of any extra dust that might be present in your carpet and furniture.
Along with these precautionary measures, you should also continue to wash your dog at least once a month. By regular washing, you will get rid of some of the pet dander in the bath water. You must remember to scrub the dog with a brush during bath time to get all dead skin off.
