Preparing for a New Pet

Preparing for a new pet is very important and should be done before the new pet arrives at your home. Decisions about where the pet will sleep and on what it will sleep should be made long before the pet arrives; in fact, it's best to purchase the pet's bed and place it where you want it before the pet even gets there. It is also best to buy them food and toys before they arrive so that you can focus on them and not stay concerned about these "petty" issues.

Where Your Pet will Eat

Your pet needs a place to eat where they won't be bothered unnecessarily. If you have a dog and a cat, it is best to feed them in different locations so that they don't eat each other's food. Cat's are known to eat dog food, and vice versa. These two pets are often very competitive with each other and will eat each other's food without shame. You probably also want to feed the pet in a room where no person is going to eat. If you feed your pet near the dinner table, they are likely to wait around on dinner time and whine for your food, all the while ignoring the dry food you poured into their bowl hours ago. Take some time to think about where you should feed your pet and then place a food bowl, water bowl, and food in this room for easy access. You'll be glad you're prepared when it comes feeding time. Once your pet understands that this room is where they are fed, they aren't likely to allow you to forget where and when to feed them and feeding time will become a regular routine for both of you.

Pet Toys

Buy any toys that you think your new pet would like to play with before it gets there. Otherwise, you will have a pet with no toys, and you'll have to go get them later. When you buy the food and water bowl, pick up a couple of toys as well. Pet toys are fairly cheap and pets love them. If you're not sure what types of toys to get your new pet, call our New York vet office for our professional input.

Talk to Your Family

Everyone in the family needs to be prepped for the arrival of the new pet so that they are accepting of the new pet. It's important to be sure no one in your family is allergic to the new pet and that everyone calls it by the same name.

Take some time to think about everything your new pet will need. You wouldn't buy fish if you didn't have a fish tank to keep them in, so be sure your new pet has everything it needs before it even gets home.
