Proper Diet for your Fish

Fish can be a great starter pet for your home, and a good option to help your children learn responsibility. Fish usually only need to be fed once a day. Depending on the type of fish you have, you might require different types of food.

There are two types of fish that you could have in your aquarium: saltwater and freshwater fish. There are many different fishes that fall into each of these categories. Each category requires its own diet because of the area it is from.

Saltwater Fish

In this category there are also three sub categories: herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. Carnivores are the fish that will only eat meat, so feeding them mysis frozen shrimp is a good option for their daily food. Herbivores are the fish that only eat plant life, so you should visit your local pet store to pick up a frozen fish supplement that they will provide. Omnivores are fish that will eat anything, so you can usually buy a normal fish feed in flakes to give them.

Freshwater Fish

Included in this fish are also three sub categories including: herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores. Most species in this category are considered to be omnivores. Omnivores can usually be supplied with a flake food that will provide all nutrition needed for their everyday living. Carnivores found in this category will usually require to be fed a pellet that will supplement their diet.

Usually the flakes that you can buy at the store are made for all three subcategories of fish, but you should ask your local New York veterinarian before feeding it to your fish.
