Swans and your World
The swan has been a part of modern culture for quite centuries. Human beings have been captured by their grace and beauty throughout the ages and around the world. These beings take on a magical, mysterious aura as we try to understand their role in our environment. They are the subject of timeless myths developed and communicated through the years, invoking introspection, contemplation, and wonder in all who look upon its presence.
The word ‘swan’ is etymologically related to the Indo-European root ‘swen,’ which means to sound or to sing. This fact illustrates our natural connection to these wondrous beasts, elucidating our desire to understand the world.
Physically, swans are equally interesting. They may live for up to 35 years, feeding on foliage, seed, and sometimes unprocessed wheat and corn from harvesting fields. From childhood, they grow quite rapidly, requiring a mostly protein diet in order to support muscle growth and mental development. Over time, the diet slowly becomes more concentrated on vegetables as an overwhelmingly major part of the overall diet.
Swans mate for almost all of their life, during mating season. The maturation threshold for conception plateaus at two years of age, however, it is not uncommon to see and animal wait until the third, fourth, or even fifth year to begin mating. The swan finds a mate and the two stay together until the children are able to take care of themselves.
