Traveling with Pets
Traveling with pets is something that takes thought and planning that you might be unprepared for. You will need to be sure it's possible for your pet to travel with you, both in the type of transportation you are utilizing as well as the legality of taking your pet to your travel destination. Not everyone allows pets and some places have restrictions on the types of pets you can take with you.
Driving with Pets
If you are simply driving from one city to another, you have a high likelihood of being able to take your pet with you, assuming it will fit in your vehicle. If you're driving a motorcycle from New York City to Long Island, don't plan on taking your German Shepherd. If you drive a car, taking a large animal such as a German Shepherd is a much more viable option, but you'll need to purchase a pet carrier for your and your pet's safety during the drive.
Dangers
Pets tend to become afraid while riding in vehicles and small pets are likely to try to get closer to you while afraid. If you have a cat or small dog, they may try to curl up under your feet, which actually means right under the gas and break pedal. This could be a disaster if you need to speed up or hit the breaks, since your pet will be under the pedal and making it impossible for you to slow down or speed up. The best solution is to always keep your pet in a pet carrier so that you don’t have to worry about where they are at any given time.
Flying with Pets
Restrictions
If you are flying from New York to the Bahamas for a week's vacation, you will need to contact your airline to be sure your pet will be allowed to fly to the Bahamas and back to New York with you. They will tell you what types of pets – if any – are allowed on their flights. They will also tell you the maximum size and weight of pets that fly on their airline, what you need to know about pet carriers, and where your pet will stay during the flight (your pet will probably not be sitting next to you on your flight, unfortunately). Your airline should also be able to tell you if the Bahamas Islands will even allow you to bring a pet and what restrictions they have.
