What Type of Pet to Buy
The type of pet that you decide to buy depends on several aspects of your life. For example, frequency and distance of travel, the size of your family, the size of your car, your intentions for the animal, your budget, and more go into deciding on what type of animal you should get.
What Type of Animal do You Want?
One of the most important aspects is the type of animal you want. What do you want? Are you yearning to play with a dog, cat, or snake? Would you be happiest with a big dog or a small dog? Would you prefer a long-haired cat or a short-haired cat? Are you interested in a friendly green snake of a poisonous rattle snake? Gold fish or pirana?
Home Size
Decide what you would like to have and then start thinking about any conflicts there may be. For example, if you have a small efficiency apartment, consider buying a small animal so there is plenty of room in your home for both of you. Of course, if you want to have an outdoor pet and you have outdoor space to keep them in, you might consider a large pet regardless of the size of your home.
Frequency and Mode of Travel
If you travel often, you will inevitable have to figure out how to take care of your pet while you are out of town. Some travelers choose to take their pets with them on trips, and some pet owners choose to leave them at home or with someone else. What you decide to do depends on your situation. Our New York veterinarian clinic can help you get started in the right direction on this issue. If you are unsure of what size pet carrier you will need or who to leave your pet with while you go out of town, we can help.
Family Matters
If you have a large family, you'll need to make sure everyone can handle the new pet. Some people are afraid of dogs or are allergic to cats. Check with everyone who will be living around the pet to be sure the pet isn't going to cause problems that you have not yet considered.
