What to Feed Your Sugar Glider

When you are considering buying a sugar glider as a pet, there are many factors that you need to consider if you are going to become responsible for an exotic pet such as this. As most exotic pets do, sugar gliders have a particular diet that you must abide by in order to keep your pet healthy and strong.

The first thing that you should understand is that a sugar glider is technically considered a marsupial and will require a lot of care in order to keep it healthy. The diet for sugar gliders is exotic, and they cannot survive on pellets like gerbils or hamsters do. Sugar gliders are omnivorous, so they like to eat many different kinds of foods, including meats, vegetables, and fruit. Meal worm is one of the biggest forms of protein in a sugar glider’s diet. They also like to have some forms of fruit and vegetables, such as carrots, raw corn, tomatoes, grapes, and other uncooked fresh food. When cleaning the fresh food, you need to make sure that there are no pesticides on the food that could make the sugar glider sick in any way.

Sugar gliders also thrive on fresh water, so you must keep quite a bit of it in their cages during the evening hours. Since they are nocturnal creatures, most of their eating and play will be done in the night hours while you are sleeping, so be prepared for some loud noises while you rest. You also need to make sure that your sugar glider never eats anything like butter or processed sugar because their bodies cannot digest that type of food and it will just make them sick.
